When Malthus’s vision returned, he found himself atop a grassy mound. Small bushes were clumped knee-high nearby. Seconds later, Aloria pounced on him. “You did it! You did it! That was amazing!”

Malthus snorted. “I guess Myaffala’s heart remains black, for all your mercy.”

Her face darkened. “I have been gone so long I do not recognize my kin any longer. All may not have fallen so low, but I will not tarry to find out. The bulk of the drow head north, so north we must follow.”

Malthus took out his staff from his Bottomless Bag, and then frowned. “Aloria …”

She frowned impatiently. “What is it?”

“The Stone.”

During the hectic rescue there had been no time to tell Malthus. “I knew about it, even before your cryptic comment earlier. My father stole it.”

He sighed and put his head in his hands. “He taunted me with it. How in the world …”

“Malthus,” Aloria said sternly, “we have a long trek north to worry about how to win it back. For now, let’s just thank the Creator for our freedom and cast our spells.”

The wizards first turned themselves invisible. They then cast a spell that allowed them to see each other and all other things invisible, for that matter. Aloria then cast Quicken on the two of them, and finally, she cast Fly. “For the first bit of time, at least, we shall travel speedily.”

“Why don’t you just Teleport to Sylyvnar and warn them the drow are coming?”

“I will not abandon you. Words of prophecy counsel me against such an option. Besides, locations may have changed. And not least, I might receive the same friendly reception we enjoyed here. The chaos when we arrive could prove useful.”

“All right.” Malthus sighed. “We’ve made it through another jam, my love.”

Aloria kissed him. “So far. Now climb on my back. I want to go home.”
